Enter the Mason
Webster's Dictionary defines a "Mason" as (noun): a skilled worker who builds by laying units of brick or stone. On Sunday, the un-abridged version received a second definition for someone who builds walls; it now says "See PETE WETZEL". In a game that featured low offensive output for his team, Goaltender Pete Wetzel of Team Pound had win this game on his own. By utilizing a single goal by Fremont Rookie Shea after being fed a pass from Lou Witkam, Pete layed the mortar and stacked the bricks to the impenetrable wall he built in net. "I don't know what we could have done better." Brian Karre, center for the opposing victim/team Billy and the Boingers. "He just played the same way week in and week out... on his head." Brian went on to say "In fact, sometimes I get scared just to take the ball into the offensive zone. I'm thinking to myself, 'what's the point?!? he's just going to stop it anyway.'" And stop it he did. In a game that pitted the two teams with best record in the league ended in 1-0 win for Team Pound. While the whole game feature barrage after barrage in shots against Wetzel, it was in the waning 5 minutes of the last half where the broomball world witnessed another octave in elevated goaltending play as Wetzel was able to handle what seemed to be 10 straight shots and rebound shots. Even in the last 10 seconds, the Boingers had a chance as they crashed the net with 3 of their players, but to their dismay, the shot from the corner was steered away from them into the opposite corner away from the center and wings. With this win, Team Pound pulls into sole possession of first place as the Boinger's grab ahold of 2nd place.
