Team Pound Punches Ticket for Fall 2005 Champions

Echoes stir of the '03-'04 Fighting Sallys teams when Team Pound lifted their first banner as Omaha Broomball Fall 2005 Champions. In a game that would feature every possible highlight that ESPN could ever ask for, Team Pound came out on top 3-0 in a win over Billy and the Boingers. Having shut out both opponents in the playoffs, Team Pound looked scaring similar to the former Fighting Sally's team which accumulated only 1 loss in two sessions and were '04 National Champions. While some of the original cast of the Sallys remain on Team Pound along with their signature Philadelphia Flyer style Orange jerseys, new faces and new playing style has separated Team Pound from their parental shadow with this dominating championship run and regular season title. Broomball experts agree, they have solidified a name for themselves.

Game Recap:

In the 1st period, the game remained extremely close. Right off of the first face off drop, Billy and the Boingers proved that they had no fear for the regular season champions as they marched down the ice and set up in Team Pounds zone. This pressure would be continuous through out the first half as shot and redirected shot would come ringing in from all directions on Team Pound's goaltender Pete Wetzel. With Quick reflexes and great angles, Pete Wetzel proved to his critics that he really does build a "brick wall" in front of the net and earn his nickname "The Mason" (One who builds walls). Only few rays of hope would exist for Team Pound in the form of breakaway passes. Those were turned away by Boinger Goaltender Steve Young and be sent on their way back down to the Team Pound end. The period would end in a 0-0 tie but with all of the momentum going for Billy and the Boingers.

The 2nd period would start off with much of the same of the 1st, sustained pressure from Billy and the Boingers. But all of this would change. In a week filled with Turmoil for team captain Trent Huebner, having his co-worker and long time friend passing away from a tragic accident only 4 days before, Trent took refugee in the game of broomball. It was here where he demonstrated a dedication to his friends memory by beating out skilled defenseman Steve Svendsen and rifled home an impossible shot from the corner. This amazing goal would not be his last of the game. Trent would score twice more to get the hat trick in the championship game, proving that his skill and mental toughness has no match in this league. Those three goals separated him from the rest of the league in scoring statistics and therefore gets awarded the MVP trophy. On the first two goal, Shay Garvin and Lou Witkam had the assists respectively.

These three goals would prove enough as Team Pound's signature defense went into full effect. With Momentum taking a full turn and the Pound's defense shutting down most of the Boingers offense, only a few shots got through to netminder Pete Wetzel in the waning seconds of the 2nd half. The core defense of Morgan Carr, Brent Saatoff, and John Willis provided a "steel curtain" of a defense as any big offensive play was turned away at the blue line. Team Pound went on to win the game 3-0 and capture the 2005 Fall Omaha Broomball Tournament crown, the first of what many believe of a dynasty.
