Three-peat: Close Battle, Fighting Sally's Win Third Consecutive Championships
To those who believe one goal means nothing, you are now proven wrong. On Sunday, it was deciding factor of whether the momentum - high Death Tongue gets the upset or the Fighting Sally's get their third crown. That goal belonged to the Sally's. Gabe Gargano, who was later awarded Most Valuable Player, drilled one home from the point for the lone unassisted goal.
Both goalies were put to the test as each shot was either a deflection or a breakaway chance. Death Tongue Steve Young made acrobatic saves look like cake while Fighting Sally's Goaltender Pete Wetzel proved to have a slinky for a spine. Both goalies came into this game shutting out their opponent in the first round, but only one was able to walk away with a double shutout. Humble :-) Pete Wetzel did not allow a goal in through out the tournament and as of late, being regarded as legend. :-)
Commentary from Death Tongue Goaltender Steve Young: We always have problems with the Sally's speed and one minute into the game they had a big chance only to see me sweep the ball out of the crease. However about 1/2 way through the game one of their defensemen brought the ball down along the boards to the bottom of the left circle. he then fined a shot that barely caught the inside top corner on the far side of the goal. ( they seem to get one of those unreal "lucky *^@^#%" goals every time we play them. Some goal from an impossible angle to the only place in the net it can possibly go!.. They press hard at the end of the 1st half but the score remains 1-0. They then proceed to control most of the 2nd half for over 16 minutes. With 1:39 left in the game I clear the ball only to have one of the Sallys lay the ball with a high stick. They are then shorthanded for the rest of the game. I was pulled as soon as we got control of the faceof. We then hammer Pete for the remainder of the game. They get one good look at the open net with about 40 seconds left, but we bring it back in and take repeated quality shots. There were 4 faceoffs in the Sallys end in the last 20 seconds. We won every faceoff and got the ball back to defensemen with powerful shots. Each time the shot went through only to have Pete stop it. The final shot with less than a second left went wide and the Sallys won 1-0. It was a great game.
